Tech. Sgt. Chance Scharer, 9th Logistics Readiness Squadron petroleum, oil, and lubricants (POL) NCO in charge of fuels, environmental and safety, preforms an inspection of a fuel truck July 12, 2023, at Beale Air Force Base, California. While Scharer was in the delayed enlistment program, his mother suffered a sudden brain aneurysm. Without a second thought, he put his military aspirations on hold and devoted himself entirely to her care and the financial obligations to the rest of his family.
