Air Force Research Laboratory investigates U-2 pilot size
Dr. Jeffrey Hudson, InfoSciTex biological anthropologist working for 711th Human Performance Wing Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, uses a coordinated measuring machine to map subject Airman 1st Class Alexander Scott, 9th Maintenance Squadron U-2 phase technician, inside a cockpit and create 3-D images to be used in pilot selection. Air Force Research Laboratory investigates U-2 pilot size
Dr. Gregory Zehner, 711th Human Performance Wing senior physical anthropologist, measures Airman 1st Class Alexander Scott, 9th Maintenance Squadron U-2 phase technician, while he wears a full pressure suit for a study at Beale Air Force Base, Calif., May 22. After baseline measurements, the suit was then inflated to simulate loss of cockpit cabin pressure at high altitudes. Experts, such as Zehner, from the Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, visited here May 21-24 to investigate how big or small a pilot can be and still function in the cockpit of a U-2 Dragon Lady.
