Beale Air Force Base, California --

“In 2009, I was on deployment in Afghanistan. My squad of four was scouting in a Mine Resistant Assault Protection Vehicle for anything out of the ordinary for a supply Convoy. We drove over an IED, and were subsequently shot at from both sides. One of our airman was medevacked, but the rest of us were okay. From that event I gained a better perspective of what was really important. Since that time, I made sure my family knew how important they were and are to me. And it was that event that helped solidify my decision to become a first sergeant.”
