Col. Douglas J. Lee, 9th Reconnaissance Wing commander, begins Fire Prevention Week by signing the Fire Prevention Proclamation Oct. 3, at Beale Air Force Base, Calif.

The Beale Fire department will promote the theme -- "Working smoke alarms save lives, test yours every month," from Oct. 5 to 10.

"Signing the proclamation is the official kick off of Fire Prevention Week," said Assistant Fire Chief Carey Waddell. "The signing shows the Beale community that our leadership is attentive and focused on promoting fire safety and prevention."

According to the National Fire Protection Association website, the week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. The fire killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres.

Members of the fire department will be hosting fire prevention events on base during the week.

Fire prevention events will include:

Oct. 6 and 10 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. - Fire engine static display with fire safety house at the Base Exchange
