More than 50,000 soccer fans attended a military appreciation night honoring America's service members during a Los Angeles Galaxy versus San Jose Earthquakes game at Stanford University Stadium in Palo Alto Calif., June 29.

More than 300 service members represented the U.S. Armed Forces and  were honored during the opening and halftime shows.

During the opening ceremonies as the National Anthem played, military styled jets performed a fly-over as skydivers parachuted into the stadium to provide the game ball.

At halftime, service members marching in formations were shadowed by a large American flag lifted by remote controlled blimp which circled the stadium as America the Beautiful was performed.

"It made me very proud to see all of our sister services represented throughout the night," said Staff Sgt. Corrine Kavanagh, 9th Force Support Squadron work flow manager. "It definitely made the game more special."

The military appreciation game was also featured on national television to highlight the sacrifices troops make every day.

"It was an outstanding opportunity for our Airmen to be recognized on such a grand scale," said Master Sgt. Andrew Flora, 9th Civil Engineer Squadron first sergeant, who organized Beale's participation in the event with the support of Operation Care and Comfort. "I couldn't be prouder of my Airmen."

According to OCC website they have donated thousands of free sports and entertainment tickets to active duty, reservists, veterans and their immediate family members. The OCC also partners with Northern California sports teams to hold military/support our troops games.

The military themed game resulted in a 3-2 Earthquakes win over their Southern California rivals with the winning goal scored in final seconds.

A patriotic themed fireworks display capped off the home team's victory.

"It was an awesome game and great way to honor America's troops," Kavanagh said. "I hope I have the opportunity to go next year."
