MISSION
AFOSI’s mission is to identify, exploit and neutralize criminal, terrorist and intelligence threats to the Air Force, Department of Defense and U.S. Government. AFOSI Detachment 218’s mission is to provide professional counterintelligence and criminal investigative services for the protection of Beale Air Force Base, California; Kingsley Field Air National Guard Base, Oregon; Nevada Air National Guard Base, Nevada; and people, operations and materiel worldwide.
The Air Force Office of Special Investigations is a field operating agency under the direction and guidance of the Air Force Inspector General (SAF/IG). It performs as a federal law enforcement agency, with responsibility for conducting counterintelligence activities, major criminal investigations, specialized investigative services and force protection support for the United States Air Force.
AFOSI Det 218 at Beale is a field investigations detachment consisting of a commander, a superintendent and five special agents. The base is located 40 miles north of Sacramento, and their AOR is approximately 400 square miles: servicing four wing commanders on three separate installations, covering 31 counties in three states.
HISTORY
AFOSI was founded Aug. 1, 1948, at the suggestion of Congress to consolidate investigative activities in the U.S. Air Force. Secretary of the Air Force W. Stuart Symington created AFOSI and patterned it after the FBI. He appointed Special Agent Joseph Carroll, an assistant to FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, as the first AFOSI commander and charged him with providing independent, unbiased and centrally directed investigations of criminal activity in the Air Force.
