A structure fire started at approximately 2:30 p.m. yesterday at a 9th Civil Engineer Squadron building here.

Beale Air Force Base firefighters along with several cooperating agencies from the surrounding area responded to the scene and controlled the fire. Beale firefighters and emergency response crews remained on scene overnight to extinguish spot fires and ensure scene safety.

The building had one occupant at the time of the fire who was safely evacuated. One Beale firefighter was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and released.

The building sustained heavy damage. 9th CES employees are working at temporary facilities until a permanent location can be established.

An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the fire.

"We are thankful for the quick response to this incident by Beale Airmen and emergency response crews from the local community," said Col. Phil Stewart, 9th Reconnaissance Wing commander. "Most of all we are thankful no one was seriously injured. We are a close-knit family, and when an incident like this occurs, every member of the Air Force feels it. We will continue to maintain mission readiness and rebuild from this loss.

"I'd also like to thank the 940th Wing personnel for assisting with the fire response as well as the surrounding communities including Linda, Wheatland, Marysville and other firefighting agencies who lent their support to extinguish the fire," Stewart said. "I'm deeply thankful for the support the local community provides on a daily basis."
