Beale Air Force Base, Calif. -- When fall is here, the weather changes, and holidays start to get closer. While the mission may keep going, families are looking for ways to enjoy their time together. Beale Airmen created a great way to add some spook to the Halloween time by coming together to create a haunted house.
Initial talks about the Haunted House began in June 2022, but the main planning for the event started in September.
“It took about 3 weeks to clean the old prison. There was a huge cleaning effort at the beginning and then we had a dedicated decorating team that was willing to work late after the exercise and come in on weekends to get it done.” Said Tech. Sgt Manuel Jimenez, 9th Civil Engineering Squadron, execution support noncommissioned officer in charge.
Overall, 22 were people involved in cleaning and decorating to get everything off the ground. While the haunted house is open, it takes about 25-30 people each night to operate.
With so much going on with the mission and exercises, the team faced challenges while setting up the haunted house like local wildlife and strong winds, but with challenges there were also rewards.
“Halloween is the one time of year we really get to embrace the scary side of things and it's easy to write it off as a child-centric holiday. So being able to see adults enjoy something designed with them in mind is rewarding. Seeing the enthusiasm and excitement in our volunteer scarers definitely makes it really enjoyable.” Said SSgt Leah Bishop, 9th Civil Engineering Squadron construction inspector
