Beale Air Force Base, Calif. --

"He is Sam Stanley from Rushville, Indiana. He was drafted in 1942 and put in the Air Corps because he had worked in an airplane factory in Connersville, Indiana as a riveter. He was a flight engineer (crew chief) on a B-24 Liberator. He flew 17 combat sorties and was injured during his service, then placed on restricted duty. He returned stateside to Gowen Field in Boise, Idaho until 1946, when he was moved to Beale to be out-processed. I was told the photo is... outside what would have been the main gate. He is "thumbing" a ride back to Indiana. His stories are why both my dad and I served in the Air Force." - Gary Stanley (grandson)
