Airmen and their families tested their strength and conditioning July 27 when an Alpha Warrior team came to Recce Town.

Alpha Warrior, an Air Force Services Activity program, is a partnership with obstacle race professionals from internationally-known competitions, such as American Ninja Warrior, designed to promote Comprehensive Airman Fitness by challenging an individual’s overall functional fitness.

“This rig brings a different aspect of fitness,” said 1st Lt. Kendra Kirlkland, 9th Force Support Squadron fitness center officer in charge. “It's a unique challenge most people don't get to try in their day-to-day lives.”

The program, which will visit all stateside air force bases, is used to show that staying fit for the fight can be done in a social environment that is fun and challenging.

While here, the program stood up Recce Town’s very own battle rig with six obstacles, which sits adjacent to the track. This opens the door for Beale Airmen to become certified by Alpha Warrior trainers and start leading workouts geared toward this specific form of training.

“The next phase of the program is a fitness tour that will be teaching squadron physical training leaders how to create workouts that incorporates the rig,” said Kirkland.

According to Kevin Klein, Alpha Warrior professional, he has seen the positive impact this tour is having on participants.

“It's exciting for me to see Airmen and entire families come out and be ready to participate,” said Klein. “We’ve had so many people tell us how this has given them the motivation to get back into shape.”

Klein also said the obstacles and workouts that accompany the rig focus on functional fitness, and can be another tool, which helps Airmen achieve combat readiness.

“When you’re out in the field you never know what you will encounter,” said Klein. “You need to be able to adapt and take on anything you face and this will help you get there.”

Airmen will also have the opportunity to train, compete, and potentially qualify for the air force wide Alpha Warrior competition, which is currently in its second iteration.
